Curriculum Overview
Science is a way of knowing which seeks to describe and explain the natural and physical world. An important part in building scientific and technological literacy is an understanding of the nature of science, which includes an understanding of the following: what scientists, engineers, and technologists do as individuals and as a community how scientific knowledge is generated and validated. As well, what benefits, costs, and risks are involved in using this knowledge and how science interacts with technology, society, and the environment.
The science and technology curriculum is divided into four strands:

Chosen by TVO educators, these resources support the curriculum outlined above. Review the below list of options along with the activities. Then, read, watch, listen or play to build understanding and knowledge.

Apply the Learning
Choose from the following to consolidate learning across all curriculum strands.

Using a graphic organizer (table, chart. etc), to analyse a local biodiversity issue. Choose one below or think of your own local issue. Take different points of view into consideration and propose an action that can be taken to preserve biodiversity.
- the effects of human activities on urban biodiversity
- flooding of traditional Indigenous hunting and gathering areas as a result of dam construction
- Investigate organisms found in a specific habitat and classify them according to a classification system. Use safety procedures when outdoors doing field work, for example stay with a partner and wash your hands after exploring a habitat.
- Assess the benefits of the costs of aviation technology for society and the environment and take different perspectives into account (for example, farmers, airline workers, doctors, home owners, tour operators).

Design a flying device. If possible create your flying device and then test it out.
- Assess opportunities for reducing electricity consumption at home or at school.
- Assess the short and long term environmental effects of the different ways electricity is generated in Canada. For example, compare the following: nuclear, hydro, thermal, wind and/or solar.
- Research the contributions of Canadians to the exploration and scientific understanding of space.
- Design, build, and test a device for investigating the motions of different bodies of the solar system for example, a sundial or model of the earth’s rotation around the sun.
