How to Use These Resources

TVO Learn is designed to meet each student where they are on their learning journey. Learning Activities are comprehensive and require guided instruction from an adult, while Resources for Learning, Apply the Learning prompts and Vocabulary lists work well to reinforce specific skills or to enable independent exploration of a subject. Use these helpful tips to get the most from TVO Learn.

Curriculum Overview

In Grade 4 French as a second language students will begin to interact with authentic French materials and gain the skills needed to communicate in French for a variety of purposes. As beginning language learners, they will learn new vocabulary that will help them introduce themselves, share personal opinions, talk about time and weather, describe food, and explore French-speaking celebrations, just to name a few.

Using reading, listening, speaking, and writing strategies, students are developing the ability to effectively interpret and respond in diverse social settings. Following teacher modelling when producing oral communication, students will engage in brief, structured spoken interactions. Students are learning familiar language structures and patterns, and will respond to questions requiring a brief answer, and make connections to personal experiences between themselves and French-speaking communities. When reading, they will apply their knowledge and understanding about new vocabulary and language conventions to interpret meaning and make connections. Students will also gain an appreciation of culture in French-speaking communities in Canada and around the world.

The expectations for FSL are organized into four distinct but interrelated strands:

  • Writing

Apply the Learning

Choose from the following to consolidate learning across all curriculum strands.

  • Create your own definitions for 20 of the words in the vocabulary list.
  • Select a famous character of your choice. What would their passport look like? Create and present the passport of the character you have chosen.
  • Think of the reading strategies that you use. If you had to help a peer with their reading, what strategies would you choose to teach them in order to help them understand the text?
  • Do you notice any similarities between French and English? What French words are similar to words in English?
  • In your neighbourhood, what French words do you notice?
  • What is your favourite snack? Check the packaging of your favourite snacks to read the French ingredients and information.
  • Use the vocabulary you have learned to teach a friend or family member introduce themselves in French.
  • How do you approach writing? Before you start writing, what strategies are helpful to you? How does it help you to listen to someone else read your writing?
  • What do you know about French-Canadian culture? Create a list. What questions do you have about French-Canadians?
  • Turn on the French subtitles the next time you watch a movie/video.
